Towards the west (Blue Mountains)

One of the most beautiful areas in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, are home to quaint stores, historical locations and amazing natural rock formations.

Home to the Three Sisters just outside Katoomba, the area is rich in Aboriginal history and culture, whilst charming towns dotting throughout the mountains offer antique stores, unique festivals such as Winter Magic, and vintage pubs offering a warm fireplace in the Winter.

The Blue Mountains has plenty of lookouts and nature walks if you’re wanting to explore on your own. A trip into Katoomba will please the shoppers amongst us, with several boutique stores and curiosity shops down the main road.

If you head further up the mountain, the wonderful community of Lithgow often has festivals and town events that offer fun for the whole family. Be sure to check out the Zig Zag historic railway if you’re venturing deeper into the mountains as well.

Going down south (Wollongong)

Wollongong is one of greater Sydney’s premier art destinations, with a consistent event calendar of exhibitions, performances, workshops and more. With a lively music scene and not too far from incredible beaches, Wollongong has something to do at all times of the day and night.

If lazing by the beach is your cup of tea, then you’re in luck. Wollongong has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Sydney area, particularly popular spots such as North Wollongong and Wollongong City Beaches. For the really adventurous, you can book a skydiving lesson over the coastline or sign up to take a surfing lesson.

A number of family friendly attractions also lay to the South of Sydney, including Jamberoo Adventure Park, Symbion Wildlife Park and the Motorlife Museum. The cozy seaside town of Kiama has stunning views, antique stores and the infamous Blowhole and Kiama lighthouse to explore if you’re in the area.

Driving to the south east (Mittagong/Bowral/Berrima)

If there’s one word for the Southern Highlands, it is definitely ‘charming’. The Mittagong, Bowral and Berrima regions to the South East of Sydney combine quaint country living with independent art, keeping the area a bustling tourism hub during all times of the year.

Bowral is home to the annual Tulip Time festival, with hundreds of thousands of visitors flocking to the Corbett Gardens to see an array of gorgeous fresh blooms. The town of Bowral is a visual delight with a selection of quaint cafes and stores to browse through at your leisure.

Mittagong proudly features a rich history of shale mining, with nature walks surrounding the town perfect for exploring on foot. Deep gorges, limestone caves and waterfalls make every turn an exciting adventure as you come across the natural beauty of the area.

Heading up north (Gosford)

To the north lies the seaside town of Gosford in the heart of the Central Coast. Here you’ll find an array of activities to suit all ages and abilities, such as historical museums, nature parks and walks and picnic areas for the outdoorsy types.

The Australian Reptile Park located in Somersby is definitely an attraction you won’t want to miss. You’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some cold blooded creatures on a day tour you won’t soon forget.
